Life Coaching
What is Life Coaching?
Life coaching is a powerful relationship for people who wish to make changes in
their lives. What essentially a coach does, is help you clarify what is really
important to you and then helps you create a life around that. People usually
come to coaching because they want a better quality of life, more fulfilment,
better balance, or a different outlook to accomplish their life desires.
The job of the coach is to support you, challenge you and motivate you towards
achieving those goals.
How does Life Coaching work?
The coach assists in a powerful process of self-discovery. The coach’s job
is to listen and ask questions, not to provide the answers. Clients are
capable and resourceful and they already have the answers within. Many
coaches will recommend four to six sessions to enable their client to
move on fully in their chosen area. Some coaching relationships can be
either much shorter or much longer. Some clients like to check in with
their coach infrequently for further sessions to re-evaluate where they
are at. Meetings between a coach and a client can be face to face, by
telephone, by email, or as a combination of the above.
What can life coaching do?
People come to coaching for a number of different individual reasons.
They may be motivated to achieve specific goals, for example, to start a
business, to have a healthier body, to write a book, or to be more effective
or more satisfied at work. In particular, life coaching is great for anyone
who feels ‘stuck’. That stuck feeling usually comes from remaining within your
comfort zone, telling yourself the same story over and over in your head about
why you can’t possibly do something, or have something, or be something. The
coach works to challenge that story and get you towards the truth. He or she
will tell you that the only thing that limits you, is you.
My Approach to Coaching:
I work with people either on an individual basis, or within a group, and
am an accredited member of the Life and Business Coaching Association
of Ireland.
As a Louise Hay and Meditation teacher (and budding Reiki Practitioner),
my approach to coaching others is particularly holistic. I view the human
being with the emphasis on the whole person - our mind, body, emotions and
spirit. I consider it very important everyone connects with their inner
self in order to gain inner wisdom during the coaching period so that they
can gain even more clarity about their life. Therefore (after mutual agreement),
I incorporate simple meditation into our coaching sessions and always recommend
that the client practise in between our sessions. At our one to one sessions,
the atmosphere of the room is gentle and relaxed so that we both feel comfortable
and at ease.
While I coach in all areas of life, I find that many people who come to me
for coaching, do so because they are unhappy in their work situations and wish
to make a dramatic career change. It is unsurprising that I attract people
with this issue, as I went through this experience myself.
Group Coaching
Group Coaching usually takes the form of either evening classes or day
workshops. A warm positive atmosphere of support, encouragement and
confidentiality is cultivated from the first night. Many people enjoy
coaching in this way for many reasons. For example, it provides an
opportunity to relate to like-minded people; they are uplifted and
inspired by other people’s progress; it increases momentum; they gain
valuable insights; and they can feel that they are also helping others
by just being a part of the group.
