“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”

Affirmations

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are statements that you repeat in order to bring something into your life or eliminate something from your life. Our thoughts and beliefs about our selves and about the world, directly influence what happens in our lives. Essentially, the goal of carrying out an affirmation is to replace an existing belief that limits you, (for example, "I could never learn to swim"), with a positive belief that empowers you (for example, "I easily learn to swim"). Many people have had astonishing and amazing through using affirmations (including me).

How do they work?

Many of the beliefs that we hold are as a result of conditioning as a child. If your parents repeated "money doesn't grow on trees" or "you'll never amount to anything", you may well have taken these beliefs on board. Affirmations work to try to change these types of beliefs. Constant repetition of your affirmation in your head often renders it meaningless and you are aware only of the sound of the affirmation of your head. At this point, the left side of the brain no longer needs to analyse it and it passes to the right side of the brain. The right side is not concerned with judgment and will accept the thought without question as part of your belief system.

How do you do affirmations?

Affirmations are most effective when they uplift you and when you believe that they work. If you hold on to the belief that affirmations don't work, then they won't work for you. Try "I am open and willing to change my old beliefs" before going any further.

You can do affirmations first thing in the morning, last thing at night and some time during the day - perhaps when you are commuting to and from work. They may be also be used where necessary. For example, if you are stressed, repeated renditions of "I am calm and relaxed" together with some deep breathing can help enormously.

Many people ask me for the correct affirmations to help them in their lives. It is always best to choose affirmations for yourself that resonate with you at a personal level. The rules are that your affirmations are always in the present tense, and contain positive words and phrases. Don't worry if you don’t believe the statement you are saying when you start affirming, and don't worry about how the results are going to manifest.
